Product FAQs
01 Why using high alloy cast iron instead of forging steel in Fuyote products?

Process

Advantages

Shortcoming

Casting

1. Oil molecule stores inside seal rings contact face groove, making sealing ability stability

2. It can be used under high temperature, high pressure, and high velocity circumstance

1. Bad look

2. Expensive compared to forging

Forging

1. Cheap processing cost

2.Better looking compared to casting products

1. Cannot be used under high temperature &high speed condition

2. Easy to burn up

02 What is the best roughness of contact surface between metal seal rings and o-ring?

The roughness between Ra 6.3~Ra 12.7 works the best.

03 How to determine the quality of o-rings?

O-ring with high quality permanent deformation should be less than 10%. It cannot be torn under applied temperature. O-ring surface should be smooth without crack, flash, scratch, or mismatch connection.

04 How to observe mechanical face seals precise wear & predict it remaining service life?

Cast metal face seals dynamically compensate for wear. The mating faces form a contact band approximately 0.2mm (0.008") to 0.5mm (0.02") wide which retains the oil lubricant and keeps out foreign material. As wear occurs the contact band will migrate inwards.

Remaining service life can easily be estimated without removing the assembly by visually inspecting the seal band location and matching this against the linear relationship between service hours and contact bad position. Precise seal wear can be determined by removing the assembly and measuring the difference between the original and current seal band length.

05 What is the principle of mechanical face seals?

Two metal seal rings interact with each other to form a contact sealing face perpendicular to the axis. As o-rings transfer pressure from housing to seal rings, allowing one metal seal ring rotates with the housing while the other remains stable. Two mechanical face seals thus are in state of relative motion.

Two relatively moving face seals create an oil film on the surface of contact band. This oil film is the key to sealing. During rotating, the mating faces form a contact band that is approximately 0.2mm (0.008") to 0.5mm (0.02") wide retaining the oil lubricant and resisting foreign material. As wearing occurs, the contact band will move inwards. However, o-ring releases elastic compensation, keeping mechanical face seals in a precise position to maintain its stability.

06 How to install mechanical face seals & what are the matters requiring attention?

Installing mechanical face seals process:

  • Remove the seal from its packing (do not lay the seal on lapped surface). Coat the seal face with a thin film of oil using on a clean lint-free cloth or similar material.

  • Assemble the two halves of the seal in the housing. Housing has a “lip” that might cause resistance with mechanical face seals outer diameter. It is necessary to fit the ''lip'' gently.

  • Perform a visual check on the o-ring and seal’s angle position, ensuring they are symmetrically seated and o-ring is not twisted.

  • Bring two parts of mechanical face seals contact face together and properly adjust the housing clearance gap.

  • Fill 70% full with oil inside oil storing space and finish all the installing process.

Attentions among installing:

  • Mechanical face seals get metamorphic when exposed in air for a long time. Only remove the seal package before installation. Mechanical face seals are easy to break. Handle gently and install in a dust-free condition.

  • We recommend the use of installation tools to ensure a proper installation of o-rings. If improperly installed, twist on o-rings might lead to uneven stress and creep down from the metal ring. Eventually cause early failure.

  • Mechanical face seals are high precision product made of high alloy cast iron, especially the contact band. Do not use sharp instruments and please wear gloves during assembly.

07 How to choose adaptive lubricating oil for mechanical face seals?

Because the contact face of seal ring is metal, mechanical face seals need a very thick oil film inside the contact face keeping seals rotated. In some slow rotating or oscillating applications certain types of grease may be used, though oils are always preferred, particularly synthetic oil. Oil provides both lubrication to the sealing faces and serves to cool the seal rings. Lubricant must fill a minimum of 33% of the sealing surface to properly lubricate and cool the rings, to allow adequate volume for thermal expansion the oil must not exceed 70% volume at room temperature. Metal faced seals work best in clean, closed systems. Oil and greases should be evaluated to ensure compatibility with o-ring prior to installation.

08 How to storing mechanical face seals?

Mechanical face seals are sealed packed in order to prevent corrosion. We recommend storage in a clean, dry, and room temperature controlled environment. Face seals should be stacked neatly and protected from impacts which may cause dents or fractures. Any seals which have been opened but unused must be sealed packed again before storage.
